Today’s Cappuccino with Me
interview is with the lovely Chevy from Chevy’s Beauty. She is a beauty blogger
and has stunning makeup skills. She has become a great friend of mine and knew
she would be great for the new series I want to do here on the blog.
Interviewing up and coming bloggers.
Cappuccino with me: Tell us a little bit about
yourself.
Chevy's Beauty: My name is Chevonne. I was
born and bred in Joburg. I am currently studying Bcom Law and LLB through
UNISA. I currently run a blog called Chevy’s Beauty, although it hasn’t started
up completely, as having a full time job has made it tricky. I am an avid
animal lover and I am a little shy at times. And of course I am absolutely
makeup obsessed. My favourite makeup to do is Halloween looks. I love being
creative and experimenting with looks.
CWM: Why did you start your blog?
CB: I originally had my Instagram
up for Chevy’s Beauty and I loved showing people my makeup skills. Then my
friend, The Busy Brunette, had her blog up and I loved reading it. She kind of inspired
me to start my own blog. I had my doubts about it and then realised, “hey wait.
People keep asking you what products you are using. What do you think of this?”
And I thought I could get my voice out there and let people know what I’m about
and what my opinion is. So far I’ve only got three posts up but I am working on
exciting content for the future.
CWM: Where would you like to see
your blog in the next 5 years?
CB: Hmmm, the generic answer
would probably be a successful blog with great content and lots of sponsors.
Getting to experience what the OG bloggers experience working with great
brands. But I would say that in 5 years, I have no idea. You have your goals
and stuff but in a few months time your could go on a completely different
path. You could stop blogging all together. It’s really difficult to answer because
this time last year, I didn’t think I would be working full time. Life is so
crazy but yeah definitely the generic answer being up there with the likes of
Pink Peonies and Baked Online. Winning awards for my amazing writing and great
content.
CWM: Tell us about your makeup
style.
CB: My style? My style is weird.
I love dramatic, out there makeup. I love creating creative looks but in real
life I’m pretty much minimalistic. I wear the basics. Foundation, bronzer,
brows and mascara. Occasionally I wear a pop of colour on my eyes. I hate
standing out which is weird for someone who takes photo’s of makeup but I feel
like I stick out like a sore thumb if I do graphic liner, bold lips or wear
falsies out of the house.
CWM: Which local and
international blogs do you read regularly?
CB: With bloggers I like to keep
them local, as it is easier to relate too, than someone who uses products not
available in South Africa. But saying that I love UK bloggers. If you go on
twitter, the blogging community is so huge there. I love reading random blogs
that catch my attention or blogs that I can relate too. My favourite locals are
Cappuccino with me, Busy Brunette, Baked Online, Ordinary Girl, Just a City
Girl, Swiitch Beauty Blog, Totally Fetch and so many others. I think these
girls have so much talent.
CWM: Do you watch YouTube videos?
Who are some of your favourites?
CB: Yes I do. I generate a lot of
inspiration from YouTubers. My favourites, most of them being international
are: Jaclyn Hill (because who doesn’t love her), the OG ShaaanXO, Lauren
Curtis, NikkieTutorials, Danielle Mansutti, Jaz Hand (very underrated), Carli
Bybel, Desi Perkins, LustreLux and the list goes on. My favourite locals are
HaylsWorld, KandyKane Makeup and Rushana Isaacs.
CWM: What things do you love the
most?
CB: FOOOOD, lol. Seriously though
my list of things I love is a long one. Firstly, I love animals. I have 3
boxers and a 17 year old cat. My animals are literally my life. I love my
family. My mom is my ultimate best friend like I can’t live my life without her
and my 7 year old twin brothers. They are my light. Having a conversation with
a child will leave you with a smile on your face. I love my boyfriend. Sometimes
we fight like cat and dog but he loves me and treats me with love and respect.
That is what every girl wants, although he could spoil me more. And my number
one love and why I am here is makeup. I could scroll through makeup pages on
Instagram all day. My wishlist is like a km long with all the makeup I want. I
mean NEED! Make just makes me feel better. It is a creative outlet.
CWM: What things do you hate?
CB: Hmmm stupid videos of people
blending their makeup with unhygienic and stupid things. This irks me. (CWM:
this is our running joke to tag each other in videos and photos, of people
blending with strange things.) Ignorant and racist people would be on the top
of my list. Sorry I don’t have time for that. On a lighter note, I hate it when
people take a bite of my food. Please it is mine and no I don’t like to share.
I also hate when I run out of foundation and I haven’t replaced it. When I hit
pan in a product and all the other products in the palette are full. When my
eyeliner doesn’t co-operate with me and I end up having to clean the ends with
an earbud.
CWM: What have you learnt from
blogging?
CB: I’ve learnt that you need to
work hard, be persistent and that you need to have a thick skin. Blogging has
been so mentally challenging because when you want everything to be perfect,
you tend to feel demotivated and blocked. I have learnt that organisation is
key and that your content is your content. There is no blogging rule book, you
do things the way you want to, in your own style. Be unique in such a
saturated market is key. I am trying to
let my personality shine through in my writing because that’s the one thing
other bloggers don’t have, my personality. Everyone is different. That is why
blogging is so great.
CWM: Who are your blogging
influences?
CB: My influence? Well when I
first started out, my friend Busy Brunette, as I mentioned above. Then I drew
inspiration from blogs like Ordinary Girl, Pink Peonies and Baked Online. I
think that it’s more inspiration than influence. Yes their influence and social
media presence is a huge factor. Seeing girls like them just sharing their
opinions and thoughts, was a huge inspiration to share my world with everyone.
Thank you so much Chevy for taking
the time to answer my questions and telling us a bit about yourself. Please go
show Chevy some love. Let’s support up and coming bloggers. You can find Chevy on the following social

When I was younger, I loved
costume jewellery. I even sold Honey accessories. One thing that hated about
Honey jewellery and costume jewellery in particular, was that it would turn my
skin green. As I got older I started investing in pieces I know would grow old
with me.
Dragonfly necklace
I bought this necklace and
pendant for myself when I was 24. The dragonfly symbolizes rebirth. This helped
me to grow and accept what had happened after my ex left me and my unborn
child.
Amethyst ring
I believe in the healing power of
gemstones. Amethyst is said to be protective with strong healing properties. I
don’t usually wear gold but this ring just spoke to me.
Triple Ring
This friendship ring I got from a
friend when I was 14. Sad to say we aren’t friends anymore but I will forever
cherish this ring. It means the world to me and I learnt a lot about myself
from our friendship.
Infinity Ring
At the height of Revenge mania, I
found this infinity ring in a little jewellery shop. I love the symbol of
infinity and how it is possible to love someone so much. It reminds me to love
myself every day.
Pandora Bracelet
I love charm bracelets and have
always wanted a Thomas Sabo bracelet. I won this starter bracelet with Elle
magazine and I never take it off. I hope to fill it with charms that represent
all the special moments in my life.

Picture this; you are standing in
front of a makeup counter and there are a few different colour foundations
staring back at you. You know you have to test one to find your colour but
there are a few factors that are stopping you from doing this. 1) You already
have foundation on so you can’t test, 2) the lighting in the shop sucks.
Wouldn’t it be great to know exactly what colour foundation to go for?
Yes there are ladies at the
counters who can help but some are only in there to earn their salary and are
not there to take time to help you find your colour. I have a few tips for
selecting the right colour for your skin.
Light, Medium or Dark? Finding your skin shade.
Light skin can either have a pink
or yellow undertone. Most people have a yellow undertone but there are a few
with pink undertones. People with pink undertones burn easily even in the
shade. Knowing if you have a pink or yellow undertone, will help you choose a
foundation. You need to look for a foundation that looks pinker or yellower in
the tube.
Medium skin tones have an olive
undertone. They are also primarily have a yellow undertone. Ethnicities in this
group are people of the Middle East, multi ethnicity and Asians.
Darker skin tones have more
melamine production in their skin. Their skin is also a little oilier than
others. Many women of colour will need more than one foundation colour. The perimeter
of the face is usually darker than the center of the face. Using one shade of
foundation will cause the face to look ashy. Finding a powder that is the same
shade as the foundation will also help avoid looking ashy. Women of colour need
to stay clear of translucent foundation.
Cool or warm toned?
Once you know what your skins
tone is, you will need to find out if you are cool or warm toned. All skin
tones have either cool (bluish undertones) or warm (yellow undertones). There
are a few simple ways to check for this.
Check to see what colour
jewellery compliments your skin tone. You can use different pieces of jewellery
to analyse which one looks better. People with warm skin tones will look better
with gold jewellery and people with cool skin tones will look better with
silver jewellery.
Check the colour of the veins on
your wrist. If they are blue, you are cool toned. If they are green, you are
warm toned.
Choosing and testing a foundation shade
Now that you know what tone and
shade your skin is, you can choose a foundation that you will match the colour
of your skin. Remember to take thee above into consideration when choosing a
foundation colour.
To test, first choose 3 different
colours in the tone of your skin. Then on the clean skin, on your jaw line,
blend the 3 colours into your skin. The one that blends evenly into your skin
is the foundation colour for you. Women of colour need to test one colour on
their necks and one colour on the center of their face. Blend them out and see
which two work for you.
This is the technique and steps I
use to match foundation for clients. Foundation is the canvas for amazing
makeup, so you need to find the right colour. Have you found a foundation
colour that works for you? Comment below or use #CWMFoundation so we can chat
about finding the right foundation.

Every few months, I love to evaluate the makeup brushes that I love and have been using a lot. Sometimes they change or sometimes I add to the ones I already love. Here are my current favorite brushes.
Real Techniques Setting Brush
I use this brush when I set my make with powder on days when I feel super oily. I also use it for setting the concealer under my eyes.
Pinkx27 blending brush
I received this brush in an issue of Cosmo mag a few years ago. It quickly became one of my favourite makeup brushes. It blends crease shadow amazingly well with its synthetic bristles.
Cala 311 Blending Brush
I am a firm believer of only needing blending brushes to apply eyeshadow. I use this bad boy to apply shadow to my lids as well as blend out darker eyeshadows in the crease.
Dala No 4
Ever looked for the perfect brush but couldn’t find it? I was looking for a tiny brush to create hair like strokes for my brows, but the ones I found were all too thick. So I bought a paint brush set for Robbie and in it I found this tiny brush. With the snip of a scissors, I created the perfect brow brush. It is tiny enough to create individual hair strokes and fill a brow.
Real Techniques Buffing Brush
This has to be the best brush for getting a flawless foundation finish. It buffs the foundation into the skin and doesn’t leave any streaks on the face.
Real Techniques Blush Brush
Looking for the perfect blush brush? One that applies just the right amount of blush onto the cheeks? Look no further than this one. It will give you a seamless application and just the right amount of color.
Real Techniques Contour Brush
On days when I do want to contour, I love the small rounded bristles of this brush. It picks up enough product and places it exactly where is needs to be. It also blends the product into the perfect shadow under the cheek.
Cala 301 Powder Brush
With its large, fluffy head, this powder brush will apply product without moving your foundation around. It is soft and won’t scratch your face.
Cosmo Blending Brush
Another gem I found in the June Cosmo mag. It is marketed as a blending brush, but I wouldn’t use it for blending eyeshadow. I rather use it to blend my concealer under my eyes and around pimples. The bristles are soft so it won’t tug at the skin around your eyes. My friend and fellow blogger, Chevy, uses hers as a highlighter brush.
Real Techniques Bold Metals 300
For me this is the perfect highlighting brush. It applies highlighter to the high tops of the cheeks seamlessly and is also great for applying highlighter under the brows with its thinner tip.
Burst Blending Brush
I have had this brush for over 4 years now and it hasn’t frayed or broken. It blends eyeshadow evenly and applies like a dream. It is honestly the best brushes ever. It is an all rounder, as it can apply all over colour, as well as blend dark colours into the crease with ease.
Burst brushes can be bought online or from independent sellers only.
I would love to know what your favorite brushes are and your uses for them. Leave me a comment below or use #CWMMakeupBrushes on twitter, and let’s chat.
MY FAVORITE MAKEUP BRUSHES

In today’s times, there are so
many different types of foundations formulas, choosing the right one for your
face is very challenging for some. I thought I would break down how to
determine your skin type as well as break down the different formulations of
foundation and what skin type they suit.
Determining your skin type and condition
Your skins condition and type
change every day and you need to determine the type each morning. How do you do
that? A simple test is used to check your skin type. After washing your face
with your regular facial wash, don’t apply any moisturiser to the face. How
does your face feel and look? Is the overall condition shiny, flaky or smooth?
Does the skin feel tight after washing? All these give you an indication of
your skin type. Below I will break down each skin type.
Normal
Analysis:
Smooth and even texture
Water and oil content is balanced
Skin feels comfortable
Dry and Extra Dry
Analysis:
Skin feels tight after washing
Looks flaky
Because dehydrated, skin will
feel rough and uneven
Shows fine lines faster
Oily skin
Analysis:
Skin is oily and shiny especially
through the forehead, nose and chin
Large visible pores
Many breakouts
Lesser signs of aging
Sensitive skin
Analysis:
Can be a combination of dry and
oily skin
Itchy and blotchy
Prone to redness
Breaks out and is easily
irritated by cosmetics and skincare
Combo skin
Analysis:
Spot dehydration
Shiny through the forehead, nose and
chin with enlarged pores
Breakdown of different foundation formulations and skin type’s best suited too
Liquid Foundation
Is brilliant for dry and extra
dry skin. Because of the high liquid quantity, it gives extra moisture to dry
skin. Also look for liquid foundations with added oils and serums to help
nourish dry skin.
My favourite liquid foundations
are the LOV EVENelixir Serum foundation and the Rimmel Match Perfection
foundation.
Stick and cream foundations
Is great for all skin types
except oily skin, as it can create a caked on look. Stick and cream foundations
are great for bridal makeup and photography. They usually don’t contain any
skincare thus won’t create a white flashback in photography.
My favourite stick and cream
foundations are the Kryolan Ultra Foundation, the Revlon PhotoReady Insta-Fix foundation and
the Smashbox Studio skin Shaping Foundation stick.
Oil-free Liquid Foundations and Mineral Foundations
If you have combination skin and
are looking for a foundation that will stay on all day long, your answer is a
mineral powder foundations and oil-free liquid foundations. They will help
absorb the oil in your skin and provide medium coverage. Be careful when
choosing a mineral powder foundation, as the powder will change colour when it
comes into contact with the skin. Definitely try the foundation out before
purchasing.
My ultimate favourite for
oil-free liquid foundation is the Smashbox Studio Skin 15hr Foundation.
Tinted Moisturizer
If you are blessed with normal
skin that does not require a full coverage foundation, I recommend using a
tinted moisturizer. It will give you a light coverage and a natural look.
I hope this helps with choosing a
foundation formulation that will suit your skin type. I would love to hear your
thoughts on our different skin types and the different foundation formulations.

CHOOSING THE FOUNDATION FORMULA
Friday, July 14, 2017
In today’s times, there are so
many different types of foundations formulas, choosing the right one for your
face is very challenging for some. I thought I would break down how to
determine your skin type as well as break down the different formulations of
foundation and what skin type they suit.
Determining your skin type and condition
Your skins condition and type
change every day and you need to determine the type each morning. How do you do
that? A simple test is used to check your skin type. After washing your face
with your regular facial wash, don’t apply any moisturiser to the face. How
does your face feel and look? Is the overall condition shiny, flaky or smooth?
Does the skin feel tight after washing? All these give you an indication of
your skin type. Below I will break down each skin type.
Normal
Analysis:
Smooth and even texture
Water and oil content is balanced
Skin feels comfortable
Dry and Extra Dry
Analysis:
Skin feels tight after washing
Looks flaky
Because dehydrated, skin will
feel rough and uneven
Shows fine lines faster
Oily skin
Analysis:
Skin is oily and shiny especially
through the forehead, nose and chin
Large visible pores
Many breakouts
Lesser signs of aging
Sensitive skin
Analysis:
Can be a combination of dry and
oily skin
Itchy and blotchy
Prone to redness
Breaks out and is easily
irritated by cosmetics and skincare
Combo skin
Analysis:
Spot dehydration
Shiny through the forehead, nose and
chin with enlarged pores
Breakdown of different foundation formulations and skin type’s best suited too
Liquid Foundation
Is brilliant for dry and extra
dry skin. Because of the high liquid quantity, it gives extra moisture to dry
skin. Also look for liquid foundations with added oils and serums to help
nourish dry skin.
My favourite liquid foundations
are the LOV EVENelixir Serum foundation and the Rimmel Match Perfection
foundation.
Stick and cream foundations
Is great for all skin types
except oily skin, as it can create a caked on look. Stick and cream foundations
are great for bridal makeup and photography. They usually don’t contain any
skincare thus won’t create a white flashback in photography.
My favourite stick and cream
foundations are the Kryolan Ultra Foundation, the Revlon PhotoReady Insta-Fix foundation and
the Smashbox Studio skin Shaping Foundation stick.
Oil-free Liquid Foundations and Mineral Foundations
If you have combination skin and
are looking for a foundation that will stay on all day long, your answer is a
mineral powder foundations and oil-free liquid foundations. They will help
absorb the oil in your skin and provide medium coverage. Be careful when
choosing a mineral powder foundation, as the powder will change colour when it
comes into contact with the skin. Definitely try the foundation out before
purchasing.
My ultimate favourite for
oil-free liquid foundation is the Smashbox Studio Skin 15hr Foundation.
Tinted Moisturizer
If you are blessed with normal
skin that does not require a full coverage foundation, I recommend using a
tinted moisturizer. It will give you a light coverage and a natural look.
I hope this helps with choosing a
foundation formulation that will suit your skin type. I would love to hear your
thoughts on our different skin types and the different foundation formulations.

Remember, its only a game...
Scarlet Dragna has never left her little island of Trisda but has always dreamed of visiting Caraval a once a year, week long show where invitees participate in the magic. She has written to the Master of the game, Legend, for over 7 years and he has finally sent tickets for herself and her sister, Donatella, to come and take part in the magic that is Caraval. For Scarlet and Donatella, Caraval is a way to escape the abuse of their father but Scarlet is very cautious and doesn't like to take chances. She needs to keep her focus before she loses her sister forever.
I have to admit that the beginning of the book was very slow for me and at a point I wanted to give up reading it, but something told me to hold on and give it another shot. As soon as Scarlet arrived at Caraval, I was captivated with the way Garber painted a world of colour, mystery and love. The book is beautifully written and has the power to draw you in. If you like being transported to other worlds and being captivated by magic, then this book is definitely for you.

Madeline Whittier is allergic to the outside world. So allergic, in fact, that she has never left the house in all of her seventeen years. She is content enough—until a boy with eyes the color of the Atlantic Ocean moves in next door. Their complicated romance begins over IM and grows through a wunderkammer of vignettes, illustrations, charts, and more.
I have to admit that I hadn't heard of this book before I saw the movie trailer for the movie. After falling in love with the movie, I knew I had to get the book. I searched long and hard for this book and finally had to have it couriered from another branch. But I got my book and devoured it in a day.
This book is uniquely written by way of journal entries and short paragraphs. You are taken on a journey of a girl, barred from leaving her house due to her illness, her falling in love with the new guy and how she figures out that she needs to experience everything. She needs to risk everything to have live one day.
Everything, everything is basically everything. It is heart warming, special and at the end shows you exactly how far a parent who has lost everything and everyone will go, to protect the one they have left.
If you are looking for a quick read, I recommend this book. Although aimed at a younger audience, I would say everyone should read it.

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland – the infamous Queen of
Hearts – she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.
For the lovers of Lewis Carroll’s
Alice in Wonderland books, Heartless will take you into the world of Cath
Pinkerton and who she was before she was screaming “Off with their heads”. The
enchanting story of Cath, a girl who wishes for the simple things in life,
opening her own bakery and falling in love. But her parents and the King have
other plans for her. She is to marry the King and become Queen. On the night he
is set to propose, Cath meets the Kings fool, Jest and fall in love with him.
This makes her life increasing difficult because she can follow her heart and
her dreams or she must follow the orders of the parents. Cath dreams of a life
with Jest and her bakery but the Kings rule is not that kind.
Marissa Meyer has a way of taking
old school fairy tales and giving them new life. Having read Cinder, I fell in
love with Meyer’s style of writing and her ability to transport you into a
different time and place. For Heartless, Meyer took the underlying stories from
the Alice in Wonderland books and created a story to help us understand the
Queen of Hearts.
I was enthralled with Heartless.
From the first page I fell in love with Cath. I shared her trials, her love for
baking and her love for Jest. I felt her heartbreak and I understand how she
became the way she is. Having grasped a more solid understand of who she was in
Alice through the looking glass, I have come to have a special place for the
Queen of Hearts in my heart.
I would recommend this book to
anyone. Young or old, who loves the enchanted and loves Lewis Carroll.

I love the Freeman Range of facial masks. So while shopping in Dischem recently, I saw a new range of Freeman masks. I was very intrigued and knew I had to purchase one. I chose the Hydrating Cream mask with Manuka honey and collagen.
I have heard a lot about Manuka honey from one of my favorite YouTuber's Shaaanxo. Manuka honey helps with blemish prone skin because of its anti-bacterial properties. It also soothes inflamed skin so it is perfect for when your skin has a flare up.
Combining Manuka honey and collagen, this mask leaves my face feeling clean and clear. My skin feels smoother and nourished. It is not a normal mask that requires you to leave it to dry. You leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water. I apply the mask before I shower and rinse it off when I get in. The mask also has a very pleasing scent. Not too strong.
I can't recommend this face mask enough. If you worry about fine lines and blemishes on your skin, I would suggest you get this. It retails for R 149.99 at Dischem. And you only really need a little to cover your whole skin, so this product is sure to last a while.
Have you tried this mask and the new range from Freeman? I would love to know your thoughts on the masks.

New Year’s resolutions
never work, we all know that. By the second week we have forgotten all the goals
we wanted to make for the year. I came across this wonderful concept of
choosing ONE word that will describe your whole year. It will be your guiding
light through times of hardship and times of joy. One word that will encompass who
you are and who you want to become.
So how do you choose a
word? A word that will be perfect for you? There is this amazing website called
www.myoneword.org It gives you a step by step of how to choose
your word. Here is a quick breakdown.
Step 1
Determine the kind of
person you want to become.
Is there anything
about yourself you want to change? I know I want to be the kind of person who
knows what they want, who trusts themselves and their abilities. I’m turning 30
and want to have my shit together.
Step 2
Identify the
characteristics of the person you want to become.
What are the words you
want to use to describe yourself? For me those words are self-assured, confident,
strong and motivated.
Step 3
Pick your word.
After figuring out the
kind of person you want to be and the characteristics of person you want to
become, it is now time to choose a word that reflects this.
I took a long time to
choose my word but it finally came to me. I have struggled with being enough
since I was young. Never being what everyone wanted, not in my personal life
and not in my professional life. Thus, my word for 2017 is:
I will be enough for myself.
I am good enough for whatever life throws at me. No matter how hard life gets
or the obstacles I will face. I am good enough.
I would love to hear your one word for 2017, why not leave a comment below telling me why you choose your word.
