Long before she was the terror of Wonderland – the infamous Queen of
Hearts – she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.
For the lovers of Lewis Carroll’s
Alice in Wonderland books, Heartless will take you into the world of Cath
Pinkerton and who she was before she was screaming “Off with their heads”. The
enchanting story of Cath, a girl who wishes for the simple things in life,
opening her own bakery and falling in love. But her parents and the King have
other plans for her. She is to marry the King and become Queen. On the night he
is set to propose, Cath meets the Kings fool, Jest and fall in love with him.
This makes her life increasing difficult because she can follow her heart and
her dreams or she must follow the orders of the parents. Cath dreams of a life
with Jest and her bakery but the Kings rule is not that kind.
Marissa Meyer has a way of taking
old school fairy tales and giving them new life. Having read Cinder, I fell in
love with Meyer’s style of writing and her ability to transport you into a
different time and place. For Heartless, Meyer took the underlying stories from
the Alice in Wonderland books and created a story to help us understand the
Queen of Hearts.
I was enthralled with Heartless.
From the first page I fell in love with Cath. I shared her trials, her love for
baking and her love for Jest. I felt her heartbreak and I understand how she
became the way she is. Having grasped a more solid understand of who she was in
Alice through the looking glass, I have come to have a special place for the
Queen of Hearts in my heart.
I would recommend this book to
anyone. Young or old, who loves the enchanted and loves Lewis Carroll.
