When I was younger, I loved
costume jewellery. I even sold Honey accessories. One thing that hated about
Honey jewellery and costume jewellery in particular, was that it would turn my
skin green. As I got older I started investing in pieces I know would grow old
with me.
Dragonfly necklace
I bought this necklace and
pendant for myself when I was 24. The dragonfly symbolizes rebirth. This helped
me to grow and accept what had happened after my ex left me and my unborn
child.
Amethyst ring
I believe in the healing power of
gemstones. Amethyst is said to be protective with strong healing properties. I
don’t usually wear gold but this ring just spoke to me.
Triple Ring
This friendship ring I got from a
friend when I was 14. Sad to say we aren’t friends anymore but I will forever
cherish this ring. It means the world to me and I learnt a lot about myself
from our friendship.
Infinity Ring
At the height of Revenge mania, I
found this infinity ring in a little jewellery shop. I love the symbol of
infinity and how it is possible to love someone so much. It reminds me to love
myself every day.
Pandora Bracelet
I love charm bracelets and have
always wanted a Thomas Sabo bracelet. I won this starter bracelet with Elle
magazine and I never take it off. I hope to fill it with charms that represent
all the special moments in my life.

Picture this; you are standing in
front of a makeup counter and there are a few different colour foundations
staring back at you. You know you have to test one to find your colour but
there are a few factors that are stopping you from doing this. 1) You already
have foundation on so you can’t test, 2) the lighting in the shop sucks.
Wouldn’t it be great to know exactly what colour foundation to go for?
Yes there are ladies at the
counters who can help but some are only in there to earn their salary and are
not there to take time to help you find your colour. I have a few tips for
selecting the right colour for your skin.
Light, Medium or Dark? Finding your skin shade.
Light skin can either have a pink
or yellow undertone. Most people have a yellow undertone but there are a few
with pink undertones. People with pink undertones burn easily even in the
shade. Knowing if you have a pink or yellow undertone, will help you choose a
foundation. You need to look for a foundation that looks pinker or yellower in
the tube.
Medium skin tones have an olive
undertone. They are also primarily have a yellow undertone. Ethnicities in this
group are people of the Middle East, multi ethnicity and Asians.
Darker skin tones have more
melamine production in their skin. Their skin is also a little oilier than
others. Many women of colour will need more than one foundation colour. The perimeter
of the face is usually darker than the center of the face. Using one shade of
foundation will cause the face to look ashy. Finding a powder that is the same
shade as the foundation will also help avoid looking ashy. Women of colour need
to stay clear of translucent foundation.
Cool or warm toned?
Once you know what your skins
tone is, you will need to find out if you are cool or warm toned. All skin
tones have either cool (bluish undertones) or warm (yellow undertones). There
are a few simple ways to check for this.
Check to see what colour
jewellery compliments your skin tone. You can use different pieces of jewellery
to analyse which one looks better. People with warm skin tones will look better
with gold jewellery and people with cool skin tones will look better with
silver jewellery.
Check the colour of the veins on
your wrist. If they are blue, you are cool toned. If they are green, you are
warm toned.
Choosing and testing a foundation shade
Now that you know what tone and
shade your skin is, you can choose a foundation that you will match the colour
of your skin. Remember to take thee above into consideration when choosing a
foundation colour.
To test, first choose 3 different
colours in the tone of your skin. Then on the clean skin, on your jaw line,
blend the 3 colours into your skin. The one that blends evenly into your skin
is the foundation colour for you. Women of colour need to test one colour on
their necks and one colour on the center of their face. Blend them out and see
which two work for you.
This is the technique and steps I
use to match foundation for clients. Foundation is the canvas for amazing
makeup, so you need to find the right colour. Have you found a foundation
colour that works for you? Comment below or use #CWMFoundation so we can chat
about finding the right foundation.

Every few months, I love to evaluate the makeup brushes that I love and have been using a lot. Sometimes they change or sometimes I add to the ones I already love. Here are my current favorite brushes.
Real Techniques Setting Brush
I use this brush when I set my make with powder on days when I feel super oily. I also use it for setting the concealer under my eyes.
Pinkx27 blending brush
I received this brush in an issue of Cosmo mag a few years ago. It quickly became one of my favourite makeup brushes. It blends crease shadow amazingly well with its synthetic bristles.
Cala 311 Blending Brush
I am a firm believer of only needing blending brushes to apply eyeshadow. I use this bad boy to apply shadow to my lids as well as blend out darker eyeshadows in the crease.
Dala No 4
Ever looked for the perfect brush but couldn’t find it? I was looking for a tiny brush to create hair like strokes for my brows, but the ones I found were all too thick. So I bought a paint brush set for Robbie and in it I found this tiny brush. With the snip of a scissors, I created the perfect brow brush. It is tiny enough to create individual hair strokes and fill a brow.
Real Techniques Buffing Brush
This has to be the best brush for getting a flawless foundation finish. It buffs the foundation into the skin and doesn’t leave any streaks on the face.
Real Techniques Blush Brush
Looking for the perfect blush brush? One that applies just the right amount of blush onto the cheeks? Look no further than this one. It will give you a seamless application and just the right amount of color.
Real Techniques Contour Brush
On days when I do want to contour, I love the small rounded bristles of this brush. It picks up enough product and places it exactly where is needs to be. It also blends the product into the perfect shadow under the cheek.
Cala 301 Powder Brush
With its large, fluffy head, this powder brush will apply product without moving your foundation around. It is soft and won’t scratch your face.
Cosmo Blending Brush
Another gem I found in the June Cosmo mag. It is marketed as a blending brush, but I wouldn’t use it for blending eyeshadow. I rather use it to blend my concealer under my eyes and around pimples. The bristles are soft so it won’t tug at the skin around your eyes. My friend and fellow blogger, Chevy, uses hers as a highlighter brush.
Real Techniques Bold Metals 300
For me this is the perfect highlighting brush. It applies highlighter to the high tops of the cheeks seamlessly and is also great for applying highlighter under the brows with its thinner tip.
Burst Blending Brush
I have had this brush for over 4 years now and it hasn’t frayed or broken. It blends eyeshadow evenly and applies like a dream. It is honestly the best brushes ever. It is an all rounder, as it can apply all over colour, as well as blend dark colours into the crease with ease.
Burst brushes can be bought online or from independent sellers only.
I would love to know what your favorite brushes are and your uses for them. Leave me a comment below or use #CWMMakeupBrushes on twitter, and let’s chat.

In today’s times, there are so
many different types of foundations formulas, choosing the right one for your
face is very challenging for some. I thought I would break down how to
determine your skin type as well as break down the different formulations of
foundation and what skin type they suit.
Determining your skin type and condition
Your skins condition and type
change every day and you need to determine the type each morning. How do you do
that? A simple test is used to check your skin type. After washing your face
with your regular facial wash, don’t apply any moisturiser to the face. How
does your face feel and look? Is the overall condition shiny, flaky or smooth?
Does the skin feel tight after washing? All these give you an indication of
your skin type. Below I will break down each skin type.
Normal
Analysis:
Smooth and even texture
Water and oil content is balanced
Skin feels comfortable
Dry and Extra Dry
Analysis:
Skin feels tight after washing
Looks flaky
Because dehydrated, skin will
feel rough and uneven
Shows fine lines faster
Oily skin
Analysis:
Skin is oily and shiny especially
through the forehead, nose and chin
Large visible pores
Many breakouts
Lesser signs of aging
Sensitive skin
Analysis:
Can be a combination of dry and
oily skin
Itchy and blotchy
Prone to redness
Breaks out and is easily
irritated by cosmetics and skincare
Combo skin
Analysis:
Spot dehydration
Shiny through the forehead, nose and
chin with enlarged pores
Breakdown of different foundation formulations and skin type’s best suited too
Liquid Foundation
Is brilliant for dry and extra
dry skin. Because of the high liquid quantity, it gives extra moisture to dry
skin. Also look for liquid foundations with added oils and serums to help
nourish dry skin.
My favourite liquid foundations
are the LOV EVENelixir Serum foundation and the Rimmel Match Perfection
foundation.
Stick and cream foundations
Is great for all skin types
except oily skin, as it can create a caked on look. Stick and cream foundations
are great for bridal makeup and photography. They usually don’t contain any
skincare thus won’t create a white flashback in photography.
My favourite stick and cream
foundations are the Kryolan Ultra Foundation, the Revlon PhotoReady Insta-Fix foundation and
the Smashbox Studio skin Shaping Foundation stick.
Oil-free Liquid Foundations and Mineral Foundations
If you have combination skin and
are looking for a foundation that will stay on all day long, your answer is a
mineral powder foundations and oil-free liquid foundations. They will help
absorb the oil in your skin and provide medium coverage. Be careful when
choosing a mineral powder foundation, as the powder will change colour when it
comes into contact with the skin. Definitely try the foundation out before
purchasing.
My ultimate favourite for
oil-free liquid foundation is the Smashbox Studio Skin 15hr Foundation.
Tinted Moisturizer
If you are blessed with normal
skin that does not require a full coverage foundation, I recommend using a
tinted moisturizer. It will give you a light coverage and a natural look.
I hope this helps with choosing a
foundation formulation that will suit your skin type. I would love to hear your
thoughts on our different skin types and the different foundation formulations.
